Activity 2: Reading about cultures and cultural awareness
Now that we remember what we already know, let’s look at some tips and tricks to better understand the text we are about to read.
While reading:
- What would you do if you find a difficult word in the text?
- Search the definition of the word or a synonym, and write it down near that word, or in a wordlist. This way you don’t have to search for the same word every time.
Answering questions about the text:
- Before you start reading the text, read the questions first and highlight important words! This way, you know what you are searching for in the text.
- While reading the text, highlight where you have found the answer of the question and write the question number next to it. Now, you can easily check if you have answered the question right.
Now, look at the text, read it, and answer the questions :)

Now that we know what culture means and what cultural awareness entails, what can you tell us about your own culture? Write down all and any ideas which you have in the Padlet below :)
Activity 3: Preview the test
At the end of this lesson series about cultural awareness, you will have to show that you have learned lots from this course. To test this, you will have to do 2 different assignments, 1 writing test and 1 speaking test.
Writing test: Write a formal email
In this test, you will be tested on how you are able to respond respectively and with the cultural knowledge you have gained to a complaint email. This email will be from a client from a different country to the ‘company’ where you are working while living and working abroad. Answer and help this person adequately.
Speaking test: Talking about a culture shock
This test will be a recorded test, meaning that you will need to record a short POV video in which you reenact a culture shock someone from your country would experience if they were to visit one of the countries you will learn about. Therefore, you will need to choose from one of the cultures in the next lessons and reenact a culture shock you found. Be as respectful towards that specific culture and understand why such a custom, tradition, or etiquette would be important for that country. Show this in your Point Of View video as well! Have fun and good luck!
