Lesson 11: Australian Wildlife
Last lesson we focused on the general culture of Australia, particularly the slang that they use specifically. Today, we are also focusing on a specific aspect of Australian culture, being the wildlife that can be found Down Under! We will focus on listening and speaking, whilst engaging ourselves in what the outback of Australia has to offer.
Lesson planning:
- What do we already know? - Introduction to wildlife | Listening/Watching exercise - Modal verbs | Grammar - Create a video message | Speaking |
At the end of the lesson:
- I can structure English sentences to convey a feeling of ability, permission, advice, obligation, and possibility - I can watch a video and deduct the most important information from it, in order to strengthen my own knowledge. - I can make my own educational video about a chosen australian animal, highlighting all topics important to the assignment. |
In this quizlet, you will find the pictures of native Australian animals and their names. Try to match them as best you can!
Before watching, make sure you read this text and keep it in mind during your watch. After watching the video for the first time, try to label as many things in the padlet, and repeat watching if necessary!
The video below is from the Australian Zoo, where we will see some American Alligators. The boy in the video is Robert Irwin, Son of legendary Australian Wildlife expert Steve Irwin. He is kind of like the 'Freek Vonk' of Australia. Watch the video and try to pay attention to what you see and what Robert says about the following things: - habitat - food - predators - prey - how to look after the animal |

Add your comments to the padlet below!
You have been hired by the Australian Zoo! Congratulations! You have been assigned be the social media team to make a video highlighting a native Australian animal, and talking to the general public about what is so special about this animal. Make sure you include some of this information about the animals:
- habitat - food - breeding - predators - prey - how you take care of the animal in the zoo Using the modal verbs can help you in making the video! The video should be between 2-4 minutes. Make the assignment and upload it to teams! |
