Lesson 6: The Irish social culture
This lesson is about Irish customs, traditions, and etiquettes. To learn more about this, we will be watching a video, and you will be doing a role-play at the end of the lesson. For this lesson, we have some goals in place so you know what you will be doing, and what you will need to have achieved at the end of the lesson.
At the end of the lesson:
- you can name at least 3 traditions and customs or Ireland.
- you understand why these traditions are important to the Irish by listening to a video.
- you can use this knowledge to place yourself in a situation where you need to adjust yourself to the Irish customs.

Let’s discuss some listening strategies!
To understand a video/ audio fragment / film better, we can apply different strategies to help us understand better.
Before listening:
- look at the thumbnail and topic.
- what do you already know about the topic?
- read the questions, what do you need to look for while listening/watching?
- Highlight/underline important words in the question.
While listening:
- Selective listening. What does that mean? (Selecting what you are explicitly listening for)
- Cross off any answers which are not the right answers. Prevent rereading the question or answer when you know it is incorrect. This will safe you time and energy.

Now, to practise different situations which you might encounter in Ireland, you will do a role-play. In groups of 2-4, choose a situation from the cards below, and role-play it out! One or two of you will be a costumer with a complaint (an Irish Karen who is very strict on their etiquettes), and the other will be a worker at an establishment in Ireland. The objective is to find a solution to the problem by ensuring you follow the Irish social etiquettes and customs. So, think about how the Irish talk to one another, what words they use, and how they behave.
Down below, you will find a document, print this out, and cut it in pieces to pick out a random situation. Or choose one you like to do! Do you want to do the activity alone? That is completely fine! Film a sketch in which you play both characters. Make it dramatic and fun, but make sure you are following the Irish etiquettes and customs above anything else. Send your sketch to your teacher to get feedback. |
Strategy Have you ever had a moment when you cannot remember a certain word? When this happens, try to describe the meaning of the word you are searching for, or use a synonym. Another strategy which might help is looking at another language and maybe you know the word in that language, that word might look similar to the word you are looking for. Try this out, and maybe this might be of use to you :) |
